Former WWE personality Virgil, born Michael Jones, has tragically passed away at the age of 61 after a prolonged battle with severe health issues, including dementia and multiple strokes. The sad news was reported by TMZ, stating that Jones peacefully passed away in a hospital on Wednesday.
Wrestling referee Mark Charles III, known as The Count, also shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, conveying the Jones family’s request for prayers during this difficult time. He fondly remembered Virgil by his various wrestling personas and asked for support for his family as they mourn his loss.
Virgil began his wrestling career in 1985 and achieved notable success, including winning the heavyweight championship in Championship Wrestling Association and securing the tag team championship alongside Rocky Johnson. His most recognizable stint came in the WWE (then WWF), where he gained fame as the loyal personal assistant and bodyguard to ‘Million Dollar Man’ Ted DiBiase. However, Virgil shocked fans by turning on DiBiase at Summerslam 1991 and eventually defeating him at WrestleMania VII.
After his time in WWE, Virgil made appearances in the National Wrestling Conference before joining WCW as Vincent, where he served as the head of security for the nWo faction. He later returned to WWE in 2010 as the bodyguard of Ted DiBiase Jr. and appeared in AEW under the name Soul Train Jones.
