Minnesota Vikings Announce Departure of Running Back Alexander Mattison
The Minnesota Vikings made a surprising announcement on Thursday, revealing their decision to part ways with running back Alexander Mattison, according to a source close to the situation reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This development marks the end of Mattison’s five-season tenure with the Vikings and signifies a notable shift in the team’s approach to their running game.
Mattison’s departure comes in the wake of a challenging season where he struggled to solidify his role as the team’s primary back following the departure of long-time starter Dalvin Cook. By releasing Mattison, the Vikings aim to free up $3.35 million in cap space for the 2024 season, a move that would have guaranteed Mattison $2.75 million had he remained on the roster beyond March 15.
Originally selected by the Vikings in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Mattison primarily served as Cook’s backup before earning a two-year contract extension in March 2023. However, despite high expectations, Mattison’s on-field performance failed to meet expectations, mustering only 700 rushing yards in 13 starts. His inability to produce explosive plays, coupled with an average of 4.1 yards per carry, contributed to the team’s decision to move on.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell acknowledged Mattison’s contributions but highlighted the emergence of second-year running back Ty Chandler towards the end of the season. O’Connell hinted at exploring alternative options in free agency and the upcoming draft to bolster the team’s depth in the backfield.
During his tenure with the Vikings, Mattison amassed 2,370 rushing yards on 584 attempts, maintaining a 4.1 yards per carry average. Additionally, he hauled in 100 receptions for 718 yards and scored a total of 11 rushing touchdowns and six receiving touchdowns.
As the Vikings bid farewell to Mattison, they enter a new phase with aspirations of redefining their running game strategy and seeking success in the forthcoming NFL season.
